Tool Making for Stone-Setting | Term One, 2024

In this class you will learn to make the steel tools required for two particular stone-settings. You will then develop the metal-working skills to use these tools on practice and/or finished pieces of jewellery.

Content

Days 1 and 2 will be spent making the tools, and Days 3 and 4 will be spent learning how to use them. This will include:
• developing skills in using a grinder for tool-making
• learning how to harden and temper steel
• learning two methods of setting cabachon stones

Objectives

You will:
• Further develop your fine motor skills
• Gain confidence with using machinery
• Understand the properties of steel and other metals
• Learn and practice the safety procedures required for tool-making

Outcomes

At the end of this course you will have learned the basics of steel tool-making, and learned how to use the punches you have made, either through completing practice pieces or making jewellery to set stones into. You will have gained knowledge in workshop safety procedures.

Fine silver and sterling silver can be purchased before the class (please contact the tutor to ask about this) or from the tutor during the class.
