Student profile: Francis Smyth*

With no prior formal training, Francis enrolled and completed the Certificate in Creativity and Art and is currently completing his Diploma level. The programme offered him the chance to explore his desire to paint and develop skills and techniques (e.g. mixing colours) to hone his craft.

When he started out, Francis saw painting as more of an escape. Yet the more he immersed himself in the process, the greater the satisfaction he got from the results. The positive feedback he received from others in his unit, along with discussions about the results with his mentor, helped to better inform Francis about the choices he was making and to push himself further.

“Yeah, having a mentor gave me heaps of pointers. It gave me a different perspective of the imagery that I couldn’t really see for myself”, Francis says.
