Vanessa Patea – Artist in Residence at Lochmara Lodge

Vanessa Patea spent most of her summer holidays travelling cross country to the very top of the South Island. The highlight of this trip was a week’s ‘artist in residency’ at Lochmara Lodge, which is located within the Marlborough Sounds (just a 20 minute boat ride from Picton).

There are three ways to arrive at Lochmara Lodge. You can walk in via the Queen Charlotte track, land celebrity style in a helicopter or arrive by boat. Vanessa arrived by boat with just one week to complete her photographic mission.

Whilst she originally intended to spend her time capturing the stars and creating astrophotography, unfortunately the moon phases were not in alignment. Remembering advice from a colleague about not holding tight to your original idea, but being open and reacting to the environment, allowed Vanessa to quickly adapt.

"I went for a walk up the hill behind the lodge and discovered a swarm of bees collecting nectar on the flax flowers. Photographing them, I was there for ages! I enjoyed the challenge of getting good focus with such a small depth of field, along with the added challenge of the flax flowers waving in the wind.”

Vanessa spent the rest of the week obsessively photographing bees.
