FINALIST – Wellington Regional Business Excellence Awards (2024) in the special category of Diversity, Inclusion & Growing People
The Learning Connexion is proud to be a finalist in the 2degrees Wellington Regional Business Excellence Awards (2024) in the special category of Diversity, Inclusion, and Growing People.
This recognition reflects our deep commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive, and empowering environment where creativity can thrive - for learners of all backgrounds, ages, and life experiences. Whether through our on-site programmes, distance learning, Restricted Programmes, community partnerships, or outreach to underrepresented groups, we believe in the power of art to grow people and build connection.
Our learners come from various backgrounds and many face significant challenges. They often join us during pivotal life changes, financial shifts, or career transitions.
Approximately 43% of our ākonga self identify as having ongoing mental health struggles or are neurodivergent. They seek a place where they can belong, be supported, and find empowerment through their artistic pursuits.
Our rangatahi gain confidence in their creativity through guidance from tutors and mentors, and through the support of peers. They learn to organise exhibitions, present their work professionally, and promote their art. We encourage our ākonga to push their boundaries and develop self-promotion skills. We actively support participation in art shows, showcasing their work in exhibitions both at TLC and in the wider community, and encourage opportunities on national and international stages.
To support students facing challenges in securing essential needs, we have established an on-campus food pantry, pātaka kai, which enables regular access to essential food, supporting both physical and mental well-being while alleviating food insecurity. And each term, we host a Kai & Kōrero, a BBQ for staff and students, which strengthens our community by fostering meaningful connections.
At TLC, we are guided by core principles: look after yourself, look after others, and look after the environment. These values are integral to our mission of fostering creativity, inclusivity, and well-being for all students.
Thank you to our ākonga, kaimahi, Creativity Kaiako and wider community for being part of this journey.
Thank you also to the Hutt City Chamber of Commerce for this opportunity.
