Matariki Flag Collaboration Project
Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as Pleiades, which rises in mid-winter and marks the start of the Māori New Year. It is a time of reflection, remembrance, celebration, and planning for the future.
Traditionally, Matariki was a season to honour those who had passed, to gather with whānau and communities, and to give thanks for the harvest. It was also a time to look ahead - planting new crops, setting intentions, and welcoming fresh opportunities.
Today, Matariki continues to be celebrated across Aotearoa with feasts, storytelling, waiata, and creative expression. It is a reminder of the importance of connection - to our whānau, our environment, and the cycles of nature.
At The Learning Connexion, we embrace Matariki as a time to reflect on the creative journeys of our students, to celebrate their achievements, and to set intentions for the year ahead.
Just as Matariki marks new beginnings, creativity offers endless opportunities to explore, grow, and shine.
Matariki, also known as the Pleiades, is a star cluster visible in the southern hemisphere. In Māori culture, it marks the start of the Māori New Year which is a time for remembrance, celebration, and setting intentions for the future.
The Matariki Flag Collaboration Project is an opportunity for our TLC community to learn more about Matariki together and create a collective artwork.
Each ākonga (student) and kaimahi (staff) were invited to design an individual flag, representing Matariki in a way that is meaningful to them. These were assembled similar to bunting or prayer flags and linked through the trees at The Learning Connexion to celebrate Matariki.
Our ākonga and kaimahi gathered both on-site and at home collaboratively through digital link to work together to create Matariki flags.
