Te Hā o Ngā Tīpuna
The Breath of the Ancestors
by Louis Mikaere
These works speak of connection between land, sky and spirit. The birds are messengers between worlds, carrying the presence of those who came before us. The kowhaiwhai, a vessel of knowledge - A living rhythm of whakapapa. Each form traces the lives of descent; the movement of life and knowledge passed from one generation to the next. In its creation are stories - Visual teachings that hold memory, guidance, and identity. Together the birds and kowhaiwhai form a dialogue between worlds - where the spirit of the past continues to breathe through the present, reminding us who we are and where we come from.
