Each year we offer several scholarships that are available for application – the Oriel Hoskin Scholarship, the Frank Davis Scholarship, the E. Mervyn Taylor Scholarship, and our Reinvent your Future Scholarship.

This Scholarship is designed to provide targeted financial assistance to students experiencing genuine financial hardship, enabling them to ‘reinvent their future’. The scholarship will remove barriers that may otherwise prevent students from otherwise enrolling.
The scholarship reinforces Jonathan’s vision to equity, inclusion, and student success. It ensures that financial circumstances do not disproportionately limit educational opportunities.
Oriel Hoskin was one of The Learning Connexion’s trailblazers, particularly during the challenging times.
Oriel was a highly versatile artist and developed a big following for her classes in fabric printing. She had marvellous teaching skills and drew out the best of her students’ creativity. Her classes combined flair, adventure and professionalism.
She loved The Learning Connexion environment and was looking to extend her involvement when she suddenly became ill during 1999. On discovering that she had only a short time to live she responded with typical serenity and energy, planning her funeral and treating the experience of dying as another adventure.
The Learning Connexion Oriel Hoskin Scholarship is a tribute to a friend, colleague and teacher who had the courage and wisdom to live creatively.
Frank Davis was Head of the Art Department at Palmerston North Teachers College (now Massey College of Education) from 1963 until his death in 1983.
Frank’s influence has been of lasting importance to three senior people at The Learning Connexion – Managing Director Jonathan Milne, Director Alice Wilson-Milne and Peter Adsett. All studied art with Frank Davis during their time at Teachers College.
The Frank Davis Scholarship is an annual grant that is given to assist students in their study at The Learning Connexion. It is open to current and prospective students and is based on commitment, potential and questioning conventional art practice within your work.
Ernest Mervyn Taylor was a notable New Zealand wood engraver, painter, illustrator, sculptor and designer. He was born in Auckland in 1906 but primarily lived and worked in Wellington. Mervyn was commissioned to create a mural to mark the opening of the Soil Bureau/DSIR building (Now known as The Learning Connexion) in 1962.
On display in the foyer entrance, the mural welcomed all who arrived. Taylor was part of the nationalist movement in New Zealand art, which sought to capture the particular qualities of this country’s landscape and culture.
The Learning Connexion is proud to honour the legacy of E. Mervyn Taylor and the historic DSIR buildings – now home to our vibrant community of creative staff and students – by offering The Learning Connexion: E. Mervyn Taylor Scholarship.
The Learning Connexion: E. Mervyn Taylor Scholarship is awarded to a multi-disciplined student, enrolling in The New Zealand Diploma in Creativity (Level 6).
