What is Zentangle®?

In simple terms, Zentangle® is an easy-to-learn art form based on creating images using repeated patterns. It’s a relaxing, enjoyable, and mindful way of making beautiful artwork, regardless of your artistic experience.

The Zentangle Method was created nearly 20 years ago by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas in the United States, and Zentangle® is now practised by millions of people around the world.

One of the reasons Ashwini loves Zentangle is its accessibility.

“It requires no prior drawing skills. Anyone can begin with a few simple strokes and create something unique.”

But Zentangle is about much more than creating intricate patterns.

“What makes Zentangle truly special is not just the art itself, but the philosophy behind the method. Its principles encourage mindfulness, focus, patience, and appreciation of the creative process. These principles can support personal growth, helping people approach both their art practice and daily life with greater confidence and awareness.”

Creativity Meets Mindfulness

Although Ashwini is also a passionate urban sketcher, she enjoys Zentangle for a very different reason.

“Urban sketching and Zentangle are two very different art forms.”

While urban sketching captures the atmosphere and story of a place, Zentangle focuses on creating intricate patterns in a small space.  Despite their differences, both share something important.

“They encourage me to slow down, focus on the present moment, and fully engage with what I’m creating. Whether I’m sketching a city street or drawing Zentangle patterns, the experience is calming, absorbing, and deeply rewarding.”

It’s this mindful approach that makes Zentangle so appealing to people of all ages and artistic abilities.
