Makers Week: Textile Stories
Drawing, Stitch, Fabric & Found Materials

This three-day workshop explores textiles, drawing and stitch as ways to develop and communicate ideas.
You will experiment with fabric, embroidery, drawing, painting, layering and collage. We will work with both new and repurposed textiles, exploring how materials, colour, texture and stitch can create meaning.
You will learn how to:
develop ideas through drawing and making
translate drawings into stitch
experiment with embroidery and modern stitching techniques
layer, collage and combine different fabrics
use found and repurposed textiles
explore personal stories, memories or abstract ideas through materials
experiment with colour, texture and surface
We will begin with two or three small experiments. These experiments can become the starting point for a larger artwork, or help you develop ideas for your own practice after the workshop.
There is no single way to make a textile artwork this makers week will allow you to follow your ideas, experiment with materials, and see where the making takes you.
What to bring
-Pre-loved, found or vintage fabrics -could be old clothes, table cloths, dresses, or curtains etc., but fabrics that you love the colour and feel of, and don’t mind cutting up if it fits the project.
-Ephemera such as paper, old letters, posters, cards etc., bits and bobs, buttons or bits of lace or ribbon.
-Usual art supplies for drawing and painting. A reference image or two that may support an idea (for example, if your project is a portrait, you could bring a photograph to work from).
-Needle and threads and scissors.
Some materials supplied by Kaiako. e.g. lightbox, iron, painting supplies etc.
