Zines are small, self-published publications with big creative possibilities – and they’re enjoying a huge resurgence in Wellington. We’re excited to welcome young zine-maker Callum to The Learning Connexion as our new Zines tutor in our Weekend Workshop class, offered in September and October.
Zines offer a creative, inexpensive, hands-on way to share your ideas, art and stories directly with others. From comics and poetry to fandom, politics, collage and personal storytelling, zines have a long history as an accessible form of independent creative expression – and they’re experiencing a resurgence as people look for new ways to create and connect offline.
In this practical weekend workshop, you’ll explore what makes a zine, develop your own concept and take it all the way from initial idea to a finished physical zine. You’ll also learn simple ways to copy, reproduce and share your work.
Led by illustrator, comic zine creator and Wellington Zinefest organiser Callum Robertson, this workshop is designed to get you making quickly.
No previous zine-making, writing or illustration experience is required – just bring your ideas and a willingness to experiment.
With a passion for comics, self-publishing and sharing ideas through print, Callum is bringing his enthusiasm for zines to TLC with his upcoming short course. We caught up with Callum to find out how he discovered zines, why Wellington’s zine community is thriving, and a few things you might not know about making your own.
