Clay for Beginners | Term Two, 2024

In this beginners class you will learn a set of simple hand building techniques. Make your own bowls, cups and sculptural forms. Have fun and get grounded with clay! Space permitting, students with some prior experience of clay who wish to work more independently in the class can also register.

Content

* Introduction to clay and the ceramic studio * Basic hand-building techniques will be introduced in the first three sessions, with a different focus each week * Decorative surfaces will be encouraged and can be developed at a variety of stages * Create further projects in your areas of interest * Basic clear glazing of the work will take place towards the end of the term * Learn how to work in a shared ceramic space in a way that is respectful of others and follows best practice guidelines

Objectives

* Create ceramic pieces and gain a working knowledge of clay and fired ceramic * Gain insight into the possibilities and limitations of clay as a material to explore creatively * Learn how to work and be respectful of a shared ceramic creative studio * Have fun!

Outcomes

* A working knowledge of a variety of hand-building techniques and decorative options * Insight into some other artists working with clay * Insight into your own creative response to using clay as a material

Required Materials:
* 3 kg of stoneware clay, basic glazing and decorative colours are included in the class materials fee
* Extra clay can be purchased from the school as required
* Bring along any favourite clay working tools
* Please bring a work shirt or apron to avoid clay and glazes getting on your clothes
* You can purchase a dust mask from the materials shop, if required
