TERM 2: Dry Media Magic | Term Two, 2024

Explore marks, gestures and textures which can be created with dry media, as well as embrace ways of creating depth and dimension. Dry media is a fantastic way to draw with colour and gain understanding of how to layer media which can inform other creative processes.
Explore techniques to create gesture and line as well as deepen your understanding of colour by understanding lighting and tone that can create form and shape.
In the first half of the block class you will work with a range of techniques to get an understanding of the media. In the second half you will have the chance to create your own works derived from your chosen references and/or your imagination.
Suitable for all levels.

* Discussion of materials
* Exercises and creative ideas on techniques and approaches to dry media
* Understand how to work from a reference or your imagination to produce your own developed dry media works

Objectives

* Discover techniques with both charcoal and pastel
* Explore different surfaces to work on
* Learn how to fix and/or seal your work
* Create a mini-series of pastel and/or charcoal works
* Understand new ways to creatively express and use dry media

* A better understanding of how to use dry media and how to work in a series
* Understanding of the potential creative possibilities with this material

* Compressed and/or willow charcoal
* Conte, pastel pencils, white pastel (good quality), soft pastels
* Black and grey sugar paper, coloured paper (optional)
* Putty eraser, fixative
* Bring a selection of materials from the list above that you may wish to explore
* All materials will be talked about on the first day
