TERM 2: Making for Matariki – A Celebration Through Adornment | Term Two, 2024

We'll be looking at the themes of Matariki and what they may mean to us as individuals and within our community. Through a wānanga-informed approach of learning, discussion and creating, we will design pieces that resonate with these concepts.
The three key principles for Matariki are:
Matariki Hunga Nui. Remembrance. Honouring those we have lost since the last rising of Matariki.
Matariki Ahunga Nui. Celebrating the Present. Gathering together to give thanks for what we have.
Matariki Manako Nui. Looking to the Future. Looking forward to the promise of a new year.
Perhaps you could create a bespoke taonga (treasure) from old family jewellery that could be passed down to the next generation. Or explore the stories of your ancestors and bring these to light in a stamped family signet ring or it could be looking at the Matariki star constellation and create a pendant in the layout of this with wee stones to pay homage.
You'll gain a lot this week, whether you aim to have a finished piece by the end, or just start developing a new work around these themes.
Suitable for all levels.
Ākona/learners must be able to attend all days as it's a short 4 day block week.
