TERM 2: Etching is for Everyone | Term Two, 2024

Hey all you lovers of drawing! This class is the portal for you to take your sketchbook creations into a place of sublimity.
Do you like chemistry? This class is all about it. When aluminium comes into contact with a copper sulphate-salt solution, an electro-chemical reaction occurs.
We will spend the week seeing what happens. Fun!
Suitable for all learner levels.

Content

* Introduction to etching and samples of finished works
* Demonstrations of etching techniques
* Demonstrations of various inking and printing methods
* Inking and printing of sample plate
* Time to work on finished plates
* Time to ink and print finished pieces
* Discussion of end results

Objectives

* Learn how ideas translate into the delicate linear and tonal nature of intaglio techniques
* Introduction to the techniques involved in the imaging, inking and printing of an etched plate
* Explore the multitude of possible image-making methods including hard ground, soft ground and aquatint

Outcomes

* Skills in copper sulphate etching techniques
* The confidence to experiment and combine techniques to create a small body of work done by etching
