At The Learning Connexion, our programmes invite you to dive into a rich variety of artistic media — from the tactile experience of clay and metal to the expressive freedom of paint, print, and photography.
The media that you can study are partly determined by how you choose to study, but they are not limited to the core subject areas we run classes on.
Whether you’re shaping sculptures, designing jewellery, illustrating characters, or crafting digital worlds, each discipline offers hands-on learning, technical mastery, and space to develop your unique voice.
Here is a highlight of the media you can explore when studying at TLC if you decide to study on site. Expand each section to learn more and access a gallery of inspiring student work in that specific area.

Mixed Media Sculpture

Transform materials into limitless possibilities

Mixed Media Sculpture explores contemporary sculptural practices that combine diverse materials and installation techniques. Learn to use additive and reductive methods to create works ranging from small-scale pieces to environmental art, incorporating materials such as stone, clay, wood, wire, glass and found objects.

The process emphasizes design, spatial composition, technical skills, and professional presentation, including health and safety, finishing, and marketing considerations.

Hot Arts

Forge, fire, and create

Hot Arts is about transforming materials through heat, force, and creativity. Work hands-on with metals, wax, and other media to cut, cast, and shape unique forms.

From bronze and sand casting to metal forging and welding, this discipline invites you to experiment with heat, leading you to discover new possibilities in the creative process.

Drawing

Discover the art of seeing

Drawing is both a powerful art form and a fundamental skill for learning to truly ‘see’. It’s an essential tool for developing ideas across all media, as well as a way to explore the expressive potential of mark-making.

You can experiment with a wide range of materials – charcoal, pencil, crayon, pastel, ink and many more, on your journey to discovering your own creative voice.

Painting

Discover the power of paint

Learn the essentials of painting through colour theory, composition, and mastery of your materials. Explore different styles and techniques in your media of choice – watercolour, gouache, acrylics or oils – while gaining an understanding of painting tools, supports, and the rich context of art history.

Illustration

Bring characters and spaces to life

Studying illustration helps you develop the skills to draw people, places, and perspectives with accuracy and expression. You can explore faces, figures, character design, and challenging concepts like foreshortening, while choosing your own style.

Working mainly with your choice of media, you’ll gain confidence and the freedom to develop your own creative ideas.

Digital Art

Design digitally. Create endlessly

Unleash your digital creativity by designing characters, environments and props, and see your ideas grow from sketches to polished digital artwork. You may explore technical processes that combine digital technologies with traditional art techniques, using tools such as Photoshop or Affinity Photo.

You’ll gain the skills to bring your stories and concepts to life in a way that reflects your unique creative vision.

Ceramics

From earth to art: explore the magic of clay

Discover the versatility of clay as you create sculptural forms or functional pieces while learning essential hand-building techniques such as coiling, slab building, and pinching. You could explore textural and decorative surface treatments, glazing, and firing methods through focused tutorials and independent practice.

Whether you’re a beginner or have prior experience, you’ll gain the tools and inspiration to develop your skills and bring your ideas to life.

Jewellery

Make adornments born from your imagination

Jewellery making is the creative process of designing and constructing wearable art using a variety of materials and techniques. This subject encourages you to explore form, texture, colour, and scale. The process can involve shaping materials such as metal, gemstones, wood, or found objects into wearable forms and body adornment.

You may choose to develop skills in techniques such as sawing, soldering, metal forming, casting and setting stones. Jewellery making is an ever-evolving field, limited only by the maker’s imagination.

Printmaking

Print, press, multiply your ideas

Printmaking is the art of turning your imagination into multiples, creating images you can repeat, remix, and reinvent. It’s a hands-on, ink-covered adventure where you carve, press, roll, scratch, or stencil your ideas into life. You may use techniques such as silk screen printing, monotype, gel plate printing, cyanotypes, and dry point.

Along the way, you’ll learn best practices while deepening your understanding of a variety of printmaking techniques. It’s not just about making an image. These techniques encourage you to slow down, pay attention, and fall in love with the processes.

Photography

Show the world what it looks like through your lens

Photography is the art of seeing, and then capturing what you see in a way that feels meaningful. With just a camera or even a phone, you get to freeze moments, tell stories, and reveal beauty that others might walk past. It’s not about having fancy equipment; it’s about learning to observe the world with curiosity and intention.

Photography is a versatile medium that combines technical skill with creative expression, allowing you to explore genres such as portrait, documentary, studio, and experimental photography. Photography encourages you to learn essential camera techniques, lighting, composition, and post-production skills. There is a darkroom available on our campus.
