Explore Eco Dyeing with Birgit Moffatt
Class Name: Explore Eco Dyeing on Paper and Fabric
Class Dates: 12 - 13 July 2021
Tutor: Birgit Moffatt
Birgit Moffatt is a German practicing artist, who has called New Zealand/Aotearoa her new home since moving here in 2011. Coming to New Zealand was not only a change in culture, location and lifestyle but also the beginning of her creative adventure that eventually led to an artistic career path.
In 2017 she received a Bachelor of Applied Arts majoring in Textiles. Birgit is currently working out of her studio where she creates art for galleries and exhibitions and also frequently runs workshops.
Class Size: 10 (max number of students)
Over two days we will explore the possibilities of eco dyeing on silk, wool and paper. We will go out for walk to the nearby bush, for collecting our plant material and having a kōrero about plant identification. We will cover the preparation and mordant process to achieve the best possible results. Participants will learn a variety of different bundles techniques for fabrics and paper. I will also teach some basic folding/bookmaking techniques with paper.
While the focus is on the exploration and experimentation of natural dyes to stimulate creativity and connecting with nature, each participant will go home with their sample pieces, one eco-dyed silk scarf and one or two small folded eco-dyed paper art books. I am approaching eco dyeing in a very organic and sustainable way, with respect to te taiao (the natural world). The class is suitable for beginners.
What materials will be needed?
• Gear to go outside (weather dependant)
• Old towel
• Fabric and paper scissors - if possible
• Leaves, rust, bark etc. (a detailed list will be sent out to participants two weeks before the workshop)
You are welcome to bring small pieces of silk, wool and paper for testing, but because of the limitations in sizes of the pots, larger amounts are not suitable for this class.
