Painting with Justine Turnbull
Class Name: Painting with Justine Turnbull
Class Dates: 26 - 29 January 2021
Tutor: Justine Turnbull
Justine Turnbull has a BFA in ceramics, ran a successful business and taught casually for many years before completing a Masters in painting. She currently works as a mentor at The Learning Connexion and tutor at Inverlochy Art School. Her work in both mediums has concentrated on the figure. It places emphasis on narrative and an expressive approach which subordinates detail to the overall effect. The physicality of paint is an important consideration; the material surface of a work should justify the use of paint over any other medium.
Class Size: 10 (max number of students)
For the first part of the class we will work on an underpainting, to increase your understanding of tone. Please bring a high contrast image in both colour and black and white. Next, we concentrate on the top layers, translating our tonal study into colour. The application of paint, using different tools and techniques to create mood and visual interest, will be the focus for this layer.
Define Expressive painting, and learn techniques that will enable you to express your unique personality through the material of paint.
What materials will be needed?
Please bring a variety of brush sizes, a basic range of paint colours in oil or acrylic, and a canvas or other support that fits your image dimensions. If you want to chat with Justine before you commit to an image, you can then buy a canvas at the TLC Art Supplies shop. If using oils, please bring Liquin and some odourless turps.
Suggested paint colours: Titanium/zinc white, Ultramarine blue, Cerulean blue, Chrome yellow, Lemon yellow, Emerald green, Permanent light green, Alizarin crimson, Cadmium red, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Lamp black.
