Javier Murcia is a professional sculptor born in Spain. Trained in figurative sculpture, he studied fine arts in Spain and has international experience of 20 years working in film and art industries. He arrived in New Zealand in 2013 and after five years at Weta Workshop he decided to concentrate on his personal artistic career. His most recent work, Eidos Collection, is a step out of the conventional work he normally does. It was exhibited in Vienna and New York at the beginning of 2020. Now, Javier is focussed on his studies of the human figure in order to upgrade skills for new work.
Class Size: 12 (max number of students)
Here’s a great opportunity to work with a professional figurative sculptor and a life-model to learn how to capture the presence of a model in clay. Use an old method called the 'sight-sized' technique which works by looking at the profiles of the figure. We’ll break the figure down into key elements to understand what´s happening with the body - how the weight and the forces shape the body in the pose. We can use this information and transfer it into the sculpture you make. Your tutor will work alongside you to demonstrate this approach and to help you see what will be discussed.
Take away a smallish life-like clay figure, the skills to do the same again and the memory of a wonderful fun-filled week.
What materials will be needed?
Bring any clay modelling tools you may have. If you don't have any - some will be available in the class. Clay (10kg) and baseboards will be provided
