Ceramics Advanced | Term Two, 2021

Develop your technical skills and working knowledge of clay. This is a fun-filled class where students with some prior knowledge of working with clay can set their own challenges and share their discoveries with their peers. If you need help to decide on a suitable approach to take, your tutor can assist.
Suitable for students with some prior knowledge of working with clay, e.g. two terms of a beginner's class with Mel or equivalent.

Content

* Welcome and introductions
* Best practice guidelines outlined to the class and commitment undertaken by all as an agreed way of operating in the shared space in regards to health and safety
* Students will briefly share their intended area of exploration with the class
* Progress ideas into actions. Create, explore, experiment, evaluate results, respond to discoveries and continue to develop work while refining skills and knowledgebase
* Input from your tutor when useful or relevant to help you progress your ideas and work
* Evaluate your results and creative processes using self-reflection and other feedback

Objectives

* Expand, explore and create interesting work using ceramic techniques which you are curious about (while following best practice guidelines)
* Gain insight and a working knowledge of a specific set of skills associated with your chosen clay project...and research other artists who are relevant to this approach
* Strengthen your own intuition and understanding of creative processes with regards to developing a personal aesthetic and preferred way of working with the clay
* Effectively respond to what arises as you explore clay and form
* Make good work and/or refine your chosen technical skill set
* Creativity Projects you will be able to work towards include but are not limited to - Level 4 - CP1 Investigate, CP2 Present, CP3 Examine, CP4 Explore Level 5 - CP1 Challenge, CP2 Synthesise, CP3 Apply, CP4 Identify Patterns Level 6 - CP1 Initiate, CP2 Analyse Patterns, CP3 Present

Outcomes

* Increased technical skills and a working knowledge of your chosen techniques
* Ability to work intuitively with clay in a way that harnesses and extends a sustainable creative practice
* Improved insight into other artists working in your area of interest
* Exposure to fellow classmates' ideas and discoveries which could extend both experience and possibilities which could be explored further
* A clear set of techniques and a proven working knowledge of your topic to be evidenced in the work produced during class

  • Materials cost: $30 firing fee plus the cost of your clay. Extra materials/ firing fee may apply for students who use larger amounts of glazes and clay quantities in excess of 15kg.
    Casual Students: $630.00 + materials

Required Materials:
* A clay of choice which is suitable for your project
* Please discuss with your tutor, prior to class, as you may wish to order a suitable clay online
* Limited types of clay will be available from the materials shop
* Apron or work shirt is required
