TERM 2 2023: Soft Stone Sculpture with Oamaru Stone (1-5 May) | Term Two, 2023

This week long block class gives you the opportunity to experience working creatively with Oamaru stone to create sculpture.
Oamaru stone is a relatively soft stone which is very easy and enjoyable to work with. There is always an interesting mix of students working to individual briefs at different levels.
So come along, have some fun creating and learning something new.
Suitable for all levels.

Content

We will look at examples of stone sculpture and the design process used to develop your idea from drawings and model making in a three dimensional medium like plastilina.
This process can be useful for exploring and resolving the basic form you are interested in. You will be introduced to the various tools and working methods used to cut and shape Oamaru stone through demonstration and practice.

Objectives

Enjoy yourself working in a creative atmosphere. If you are new to this medium the objective is for you to create a simple sculpted form based on your own creative interests. On-site students may continue with work in progress.

Outcomes

You will have the experience and learning that can only be achieved by 'doing it'. Gain an understanding of soft stone sculpture, the qualities of Oamaru stone and the tools and processes used to work it. When required, your tutor will demonstrate and instruct in the use of unfamiliar tools and equipment as well as explain appropriate safety procedures for yourself and others.

Required Materials:
* Stone may be purchased through the TLC materials shop during working hours - 10.00am to 2.00pm, Monday to Friday.
* Stone prices - 300mm X 300mm X 500mm approximately $75.00 300mm X 300mm X 1000mm $145.00 - $150.00
* For smaller projects, students may decide to purchase jointly and share a block
* There are often smaller offcuts available at no cost to use as practice pieces
* While the studio is equipped with extraction fans, it is recommended that you wear a dust mask, also available at the shop. A loose shirt or overalls is also recommended. Please bring a pencil. If you wish to do some explorative modelling work, plastilina is available at $10.70 per block. You may need one or two sheets of sandpaper for finishing work. Also, if you complete a work to be placed outdoors there is stone sealer available from the materials shop too.
