Mandy Hague, TLC graduate and artist, has won two awards in the 2017 Molly Morpeth Canaday Awards.

Presented by Arts Whakatāne in association with Whakatāne Museum and Arts, the awards are dedicated to excellence in art across contemporary and traditional painting genres. They celebrate the development of painting and drawing on a national level and reward artists who create outstanding works.

Mandy’s painting, ‘It’s the Real Thing’, received the Local Artist Award and also scooped up People’s Choice, with her work receiving the most number of votes. Eighty works were selected for the exhibition out of a total of 430 entries by sole guest judge, Felicity Milburn.

“This work was one that really sang out to me when the entry first came in. Contrasting a delicate organic ecosystem with the all-too-familiar shape of the ubiquitous plastic soft drink bottle, this understated but exquisitely observed work plays with ideas of containment, protection and authenticity. There’s a sense of mystery about whether the bottle is destroying the delicacy of the environment or whether the environment is actually taking over the bottle.”

Lovely! I choose to see the environment taking over the bottle. Then transfer that thought out to the whole planet!
