Managing Director

I come from a family where five brothers and a sister were all encouraged to do whatever they wanted provided they were committed to it. We learnt how to be ourselves rather than conforming to what others might have preferred. We questioned, we challenged, we did our own things. We got into the habit of taking risks and trusting our judgement. We are all very different and we have all been successful.
This pattern turned out to be the model for The Learning Connexion. I believe the same approach can work for everyone. The toughest part is coping when things don't seem to be working. I ran into serious strife in the early 70s - deeply in debt and without any obvious means of progress. I bought a book on screen printing, learnt how to do it, made my first print and sold a hundred. A few weeks later I took a space at the Auckland Easter Show. Things didn't go well until we created a poster of Peter Fonda on the Easy Rider "chopper". Suddenly we experienced a commercial feeding frenzy and we couldn't print the pictures fast enough. At the end of 10 days we had enough money to buy a house (and my brother bought a racing motor bike for fun). From that time I've always felt confident that I can make things work in the market place. I want to share the pattern with anyone who has a yearning to live creatively instead of getting locked in a production line.
